Kissonerga: Paphos's Coastal Village Between Potima Bay and the Hills

Kissonerga is worth a half-day if you want a swim-and-stroll stop north of Kato Paphos rather than another archaeological ticket: the draw is the Potima shoreline and its completed coastal path, with a village centre set back from the sea. It sits in the Paphos district, close enough to the resort sprawl to combine with a beach day and quiet enough to feel separate from it.

This guide separates the two halves of the village, explains the shore path and the status of the planned marina, then covers character, food and beds, transport and the best months. Details such as opening times belong to whatever venue you actually plan to visit.

Where Kissonerga sits in the Paphos district

Kissonerga lies on the coast north-west of Kato Paphos, on the road that continues towards Coral Bay. That position makes it a natural stop between the harbour and the beaches further up the coast, rather than a destination in its own right for most visitors.

The village is defined by its coastal frontage and archaeological interest rather than by a historic core of the sort you find in Paphos itself. Treat it as a village with a shoreline, not as a walled old town, and plan around the sea rather than around monuments.

The layout: village centre, Potima coastal strip and the shore

The most useful thing to understand is that Kissonerga has two distinct parts. The village centre sits inland, while the tourist and residential development hugs the coast at Potima, where the shoreline, the road and the newer building are concentrated.

If you arrive expecting one compact place, plan for two separate stops. Decide before you set out whether you want the village centre or the Potima shore, and use the car to move between them. Travel between Kato Paphos and this stretch of coast, and onwards, is covered in the Paphos Neighborhoods: 5 Area Guides.

Potima Bay and the Kissonerga coastal path

Sponsored

The coastal path is the main reason to come. The village council announced its completion in March 2024, describing the finished route as having cost a fraction of the budgeted figure after a long delivery; the same path had earlier been the subject of an audit report on cost overruns, so its history is as notable as the walk itself.

Come for the sea views and an easy leg-stretch rather than for a long-distance route. Treat it as a promenade to explore on foot and see how far you want to go.

Potima Bay itself is the beach and swimming focus for this stretch. The surrounding development has expanded, including a new tourist project agreed in the Potima area, so expect a shoreline in transition rather than a secluded cove.

The Paphos marina project at Kissonerga

You may read about a Paphos marina at Kissonerga, but there is no marina to visit. The project has moved through tender stages, with consultants sought to prepare the terms of tender and construction at one point announced for 2025, so check the current position before planning anything around it.

For a visit now, that means no berths, no waterfront restaurants on a marina quay and no boat trips from a Kissonerga marina. Any boat trip you take will leave from an established harbour elsewhere, such as Paphos or Latchi, so book with the operator directly.

Character and who it suits

Kissonerga has positioned itself on environmental grounds: it was named Green community of Cyprus for 2023 by the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education (Cycere) in two categories, an award the village's mukhtar called an honour for the village and the wider Paphos district.

That makes it a good fit for travellers who want a quieter coastal base with a village identity, and who are happy to drive to the beach, to dinner and to the sights. It suits people combining a shoreline walk with a swim, and those basing themselves in the village while exploring the wider Paphos coast by car.

It suits you less if you want to step out of your accommodation into a dense grid of restaurants, bars and sights. If that is the plan, base yourself in Kato Paphos, where the harbour, the archaeological park and the shopping are all walkable, or look at Chlorakas (Chloraka), Paphos just down the coast for an intermediate option.

Anyone relying on foot alone should think carefully, given the split between centre and shore. For a different inland-village feel above the coast, Tala, Cyprus is a short drive up into the hills.

Where to eat and stay in Kissonerga

Accommodation in Kissonerga is mostly self-catering rather than large resort hotels, spread between the Potima coastal strip and the hillside above it. Book direct with the property and confirm what is within walking distance before you commit.

For eating, decide by area rather than by name: the village centre serves the resident community, while the coastal strip has places geared to visitors. Menus and prices change with the season, so check on arrival rather than relying on older reviews.

If you want a wider choice, Kato Paphos is a short drive away, with the harbour area and the shopping there, including supermarkets for groceries and supplies. For archaeology, the Paphos coach and boat trips leave from the established harbour.

Getting there and around, with and without a car

A car is the practical choice. Kissonerga is on the coast road north-west of Kato Paphos, and having your own transport lets you combine the village centre with the Potima shore and the coastal path in a single day without waiting around. Cyprus drives on the left and the Republic uses the euro, so budget in euros.

Without a car, you are dependent on the bus network that links Paphos with Coral Bay and the coast villages, plus taxis. Check the last services before you go out if you plan to eat on the coast and return to Kato Paphos.

Parking along the coastal strip can be tight in high summer, so expect to make a short walk from your space at busy swimming access points.

When to go: heat, crowds and the coastal walk

Sponsored

Summer is hot and bright, which suits early-morning or late-afternoon walks along the Potima path but makes midday exposure uncomfortable. Carry water, wear a hat and time the coastal walk for the edges of the day rather than the middle.

The coast here is busy in July and August, when the Paphos district fills with holidaymakers and the road along the shore slows down. Spring and autumn give you the same views with milder temperatures and more room on the path, and the sea stays swimmable at the shoulders of the season.

Winter is quiet, with some coastal businesses reducing their opening. If you are coming outside high season, confirm that the places you want are open before you build a day around them.

Should Kissonerga make your Paphos shortlist?

Include Kissonerga if you want a shoreline walk and a swim away from the busiest stretches of Kato Paphos, and if you have a car to move between the Potima coast and the village centre. The completed coastal path is the concrete reason to go, and the Green community award tells you something about how the village sees itself.

Skip it as a base if you want everything on foot, and skip the marina question entirely until the project is further along. For the wider picture, Paphos Attractions covers the sites that justify a day in the district.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kissonerga worth visiting?

Yes, for a short stop built around the Potima shoreline and the completed coastal path, ideally combined with a swim. It is not a place for a full day of sightseeing, and there is no marina to visit at present.

Is Kissonerga near Coral Bay?

It is on the same coastal road, north-west of Kato Paphos and short of Coral Bay. With a car it works as a stop between the two; without one, you depend on the coastal bus services.

Do I need a car in Kissonerga?

A car is the practical choice because the village centre and the Potima coastal strip are separate. Buses and taxis exist, but check the last services before relying on them in the evening.
