Diving in Protaras suits beginners best: the sheltered Cape Greco bays allow shore entries without a boat, and two dive centres based between Protaras and Ayia Napa run daily sessions from them. A single try-dive is the cheapest way in, a two-dive combo adds the MUSAN sculpture museum, and the Zenobia wreck is a separate trip south to Larnaca for certified divers. This guide sets out the sites, the certification ladder and the quoted package prices so you can pick the right booking.

What diving in Protaras is like

Protaras sits on the south-east corner of Cyprus, with Cape Greco and its rocky headlands a short drive north-east of the strip. Operators describe the local water as calm and clear, and one local operator notes that dive sites around Protaras and Cape Greco offer visibility of up to 30 metres with usually very calm seas. Almost all local diving is from shore, which means no boat crossing, short briefings and a schedule that copes with afternoon starts.

Two established centres work this coast: Easy Divers Cyprus, a PADI 5-Star centre operating since 2001 with a base serving Protaras and Ayia Napa, and Poseidon Dive Centre, an SSI centre running private beginner sessions and guided dives around Cape Greco. Between them they cover the main local sites, the MUSAN sculpture park and trips to the Zenobia. If you are weighing up the island more broadly, our guide to diving in Cyprus covers the other regional centres.

Green Bay, the Caves and Cyclops Cave

The core local shore dives cluster around Cape Greco. Easy Divers lists Green Bay, the Caves and Cyclops Cave as the area's standout sites, alongside Da Costa Bay, the Blue Hole and the Chapel dive site, plus a Nemesis Wreck and an HMS Cricket wreck for those with the right training. Green Bay is the gentlest entry and the usual first dive for beginners, with a shallow sandy slope before the reef.

Poseidon runs two guided local shore dives with full equipment included as a standard certified-diver package, which suits anyone who wants a guide rather than a course. The Caves and Cyclops Cave reward confident divers with swim-throughs and rocky structure, while Green Bay works for a relaxed second dive. Shore entries mean you carry your own kit to the water, so mention any mobility concerns when booking.

MUSAN, the underwater sculpture museum off Ayia Napa

Sponsored

MUSAN is an underwater sculpture park off Ayia Napa, and both centres offer it as a dive in its own right or as the second dive of a beginner combo. Easy Divers markets a Green Bay plus MUSAN package aimed squarely at beginners, pairing a shallow first dive with the sculpture forest. Poseidon prices a standalone MUSAN dive at 75 euros and includes it in its two-dive beginner combo.

The appeal is that sculpture diving gives new divers something to look at beyond reef and fish, with statues at depths that suit a first or second open-water dive. It is not a wreck dive and does not need a wreck specialty. If you have only one day in the water, MUSAN is the more distinctive choice than a repeat bay dive.

The Zenobia wreck at Larnaca

The Zenobia is the big-ticket dive from Protaras, but it lies off Larnaca, not on the local coast, so it is a full day out with a drive south rather than a shore entry. Easy Divers calls it one of the world's top wreck dives and runs it as a dedicated trip for certified divers. Poseidon offers two Zenobia dives as a package priced at 160 euros.

Treat Zenobia as a certified-diver day: it is deeper and more demanding than anything at Cape Greco, and the two-dive format reflects the depth and the travel. Beginners should bank a local shore dive first and plan the wreck for a return visit. Our diving in Larnaca guide covers the wreck side of the island in more detail.

Beginner options compared

Poseidon quotes 85 euros for a Discover Scuba session with no experience needed, age 10 and up, photos included, at either 09:00 or 13:45. The two-dive Discover Scuba plus MUSAN combo is 150 euros, so the second dive costs 65 euros more than the single try-dive. That is the clearest value decision on the coast: one dive to test the water, or two to include the sculpture park.

Easy Divers runs the equivalent Discover Scuba programme for absolute beginners and the Green Bay plus MUSAN package as its beginner combo, with small groups and a free local pickup service listed among its selling points. Neither centre requires prior certification for these introductory dives.

Certified-diver options compared

If you already hold a certification, the choice is local versus wreck. Two guided local shore dives with full equipment are priced as an mid-range package, while the two-dive Zenobia trip carries a clear premium for the Larnaca crossing. Both are guided, so the difference is site quality and travel time rather than instruction. Compare current prices from the dive centres before booking and weigh the extra cost of the wreck day against how much time you want in the water.

Easy Divers structures its certified diving around guided shore and boat dives to Cape Greco, the Nemesis Wreck and the reefs of Green Bay, and it bills itself as a Zenobia specialist. Divers travelling with non-diving partners should note that the Zenobia day takes them away from Protaras for most of the day.

Course routes: Open Water, Advanced and Nitrox

Sponsored

The certification ladder starts with Open Water. The SSI Open Water Diver course runs over three mornings and includes equipment and small groups. That is the route to independent diving rather than guided tasters, and it is the sensible booking if you plan to dive again on future holidays. Above that, Easy Divers offers PADI Advanced Open Water with five adventure dives under instructor supervision, allowing dives to 30 metres, and a Nitrox specialty that extends no-decompression time on repetitive dives. SSI Enriched Air Nitrox 32 is also available as a fully online course with no training dive required; check the current course fee directly with the centre. Advanced training and Nitrox are the usual steps towards deeper wreck diving.

Prices in euros and what is bundled

Quoted prices vary by operator and package, so compare what each includes before deciding. Poseidon's figures include photos and equipment in its beginner and local dive packages, and local pickup is available in Protaras and Pernera. Easy Divers advertises small groups, no hidden costs and free local pickup, while its figures sit on a separate price list on its site.

Photos matter more than they look: a dive with images included saves you buying them afterwards, and Poseidon treats photography as part of its beginner experience, with photos included in its listed beginner and local dive packages. Equipment hire is included in the packages quoted by Poseidon. Ask whether pickup covers your hotel before booking, because outlying accommodation may fall outside the stated areas.

Session times, ages and group sizes

Poseidon runs beginner sessions at 09:00 and 13:45, so the morning slot avoids the peak afternoon heat and leaves the rest of the day free. The minimum age for Discover Scuba with Poseidon is 10. Small groups are standard at both centres, which matters for how much instructor attention a nervous first-timer gets.

If you want the 09:00 slot, book well ahead in high summer, since the afternoon option is the fallback. Bring a towel, swimwear and your certification card if you have one; the centres supply the rest of the kit. Divers with medical conditions should complete the standard PADI or SSI medical questionnaire before arriving.

Choosing between the Protaras operators

Sponsored

The practical split is agency and style. Easy Divers runs the PADI system as a 5-Star centre, operating since 2001, with a broad menu from Discover Scuba through Divemaster and instructor training. Poseidon runs SSI, leans on private and small-group beginner sessions, and publishes its package prices openly on its site.

If you are continuing a PADI certification path, staying with PADI keeps your records in one place; SSI works the same way in reverse. Check pickup coverage and session times against your accommodation before you commit, especially if you are staying in Pernera or towards Ayia Napa. Divers heading west afterwards can compare options in our diving in Paphos guide.

When to dive and how conditions shape the plan

Local operators describe the Cape Greco sites as usually calm with good visibility, which is why shore diving works here through much of the year. Conditions still change day to day, and a centre may switch sites if the sea is up. Morning sessions generally give the flattest water before the afternoon breeze builds.

Summer is the busiest season, so book beginner dives and Zenobia trips several days ahead. Winter diving continues but with fewer sessions and possible weather cancellations, so build flexibility into your plans. Confirm current availability and prices directly with your chosen centre before you travel, as packages and schedules change by season.

Which Protaras dive should you book?

For a first underwater experience, book a Discover Scuba session and add the MUSAN combo only if you enjoy the first dive; the 65-euro step up buys a second, more scenic dive. Certified divers should do two local shore dives at Cape Greco unless the Zenobia is the reason for the trip, in which case budget the 160-euro two-dive package and a full day.

Confirmation of pickup area, session time and the current price comes from the centre before you pay. Divers continuing around the island can plan the rest of the trip with our diving in Cyprus overview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a licence to dive in Protaras?

No. Beginner programmes such as Discover Scuba require no certification or prior experience, and Poseidon lists a minimum age of 10 for its introductory dive. Certified dives and courses need the relevant certification, and the Zenobia is run for certified divers.

Where is the Zenobia wreck?

The Zenobia lies off Larnaca, not on the Protaras coast, so it is booked as a day trip with a drive south rather than a shore dive. Operators in Protaras run dedicated Zenobia packages for certified divers.

How much does diving in Protaras cost?

Quoted package prices vary by operator and what is included. Poseidon publishes its figures on its own site and Easy Divers keeps a separate price list, so compare what each bundle contains before booking.
