Nicosia sightseeing: plan your walk through the old city
Nicosia's sights divide neatly between the walled old town and the streets just outside it. The Venetian Walls ring the centre, Ledra Street cuts through it, and the Cyprus Museum sits a short walk west of the walls on Mouseiou 1. Most of the old town is free to wander, but several interiors charge or keep limited hours.
The Cyprus Museum is the flagship archaeological stop, with Neolithic finds through to Roman sculpture and the Agia Irini terracottas worth about two hours. East of the centre, Famagusta Gate is the surviving Venetian gate, a quick 20 to 30 minute look on a wall walk. North of the Green Line, Büyük Han and Selimiye Mosque draw you across on foot with your passport.
Several places cost nothing: the Archbishop's Palace museums open free Tuesday to Friday and Saturday mornings, the Municipal Garden in Ayioi Omologites is free, and Omeriye Mosque welcomes visitors outside Friday prayers from 12:30 to 13:30. Book ahead where crossing rules apply, and check hours before setting out.

Ledra Street, Nicosia: The Divided City's Main Walk
Walk this pedestrian shopping street north from Eleftheria Square and it narrows into the Green Line crossing, where the buffer zone opens ahead. Note that crossing rules and museum hours change, so confirm both shortly before travelling.
2 hours · street free; Byzantine Museum €7, €4 groups over ten · Book ahead · Best for crossing into the northern old town

Venetian Walls of Nicosia: What to See and How Long It Takes
A ring of 16th-century bastions and gates rather than one monument, best walked as a loop through the old town. Most of the outer face is exposed, so tackle it early or late in summer.
half a day · walls free to walk; Byzantine Museum €7 · Best for walkers exploring the old town

Cyprus Museum, Nicosia: What to See and How Long It Takes
Nicosia's flagship archaeological collection runs from Neolithic finds to Roman sculpture, with the Agia Irini terracottas as its standout. Give it about two hours, and note that hours and tickets are set by the Department of Antiquities, so confirm them before setting out.
about two hours · Best for island archaeology before visiting sites

Famagusta Gate, Nicosia: Visiting the Venetian Gate
The eastern survivor of the three Venetian gates into Nicosia's old town, a working cultural venue with a vaulted passage and moat. Most people spend 20 to 30 minutes here, so treat it as one stop on a walk along the walls rather than the day's destination.
20-30 minutes · Best for old town wall walkers

Selimiye Mosque, Nicosia: Visiting the Former Cathedral of St Sophia
Cross the Green Line on foot with your passport to reach this Gothic former cathedral, later a mosque. Allow time for the border queue, then look for the carved west portals and the two minarets added after 1570.
60-90 minutes · Best for Gothic architecture and history

Büyük Han, Nicosia: Inside the Old City's Ottoman Inn
A two-storey Ottoman inn built soon after the 1570 conquest, with vaulted galleries around a courtyard holding a small domed mosque and fountain. Reaching it means crossing the Green Line on foot at Ledra Street with your passport, and gate times are not published.
under an hour · no ticket price published · Best for Ottoman architecture and old-city walks

Byzantine Museum Nicosia: What to See and How to Visit
The Archbishopric's museum holds over 200 icons spanning the 9th to 19th centuries, plus the Kanakaria mosaics brought back to Cyprus. It only opens Tuesday to Saturday, so don't plan a Monday visit.
1-2 hours · €7; groups over 10 and concessions €4 · Best for Byzantine art and icon lovers

Archbishop's Palace, Nicosia: Visiting Guide
Only the two museums in the 18th-century Old Palace are open to visitors, with free entry Tuesday to Friday and Saturday mornings; the Neo-Byzantine block beside it is administrative, so do not hunt for an entrance there.
60 minutes · free entry · Best for church history and Cypriot craft

Omeriye Mosque, Nicosia: What to See and How to Visit
A 14th-century Augustinian church wrecked in the 1570 bombardment and reused as a mosque, with medieval walls below a wooden roof and a minaret carrying two galleries. Time your look round outside Friday prayers from 12:30 to 13:30.
20-30 minutes · Free · Best for medieval and Ottoman architecture

Nicosia Municipal Garden: A Visitor's Guide to the City Park
A small city park behind the Parliament building, with goldfish ponds, mature trees and a renewed playground. It is a 15–20 minute shaded walk-through, or 30–45 minutes if children need the play area; don't build a day around it.
15-45 minutes · free entry · Best for families and a short breather

Lapidary Museum, Nicosia: Visiting North Nicosia's Stone Museum
A one-room collection of carved capitals, arch fragments and moulded blocks in an old medieval shell near Selimiye Camii. Allow half an hour, and don't build a day around it — hours and entry charges aren't fixed, so check before crossing.
20-30 minutes · Best for walkers touring the old city
Free stops around the old town
The Archbishop's Palace museums cost nothing Tuesday to Friday and Saturday mornings. Omeriye Mosque is free to enter outside Friday prayers from 12:30 to 13:30, and the Municipal Garden in Ayioi Omologites is free, with a playground for a 30 to 45 minute break. Büyük Han has no ticket price published, and the Venetian Walls are free to walk, though the Byzantine Museum inside the old town charges €7.
Ledra Street itself is free to walk, but the Byzantine Museum at its northern end costs €7, or €4 for groups over ten.
What to sort before you cross
Ledra Street leads to the Green Line crossing, where booking is recommended because crossing rules change. Carry your passport for the walk north to Büyük Han and Selimiye Mosque, and allow time for the border queue. The Cyprus Museum's hours and tickets are set by the Department of Antiquities, so confirm them before setting out. The Byzantine Museum opens Tuesday to Saturday only, so avoid planning a Monday visit.
